This hike is dedicated to Megachirella wachtleri, one of the oldest known reptiles. The starting point is the tourist office in Mitterolang, where the fossil is on display.
The route leads through the village to the old municipal building, whose façade features an artwork by street artist Omar Allievi depicting the Pragser Dolomites, where the fossil was discovered. It then continues towards Oberolang, crossing the Furkelbach and heading up to the church.
Passing the park and the Kinderwelt, a path leads to the old forge and on to the historic Lipper sawmill. After crossing the Brunstbach stream, a narrow trail follows the water to the Chill Area.
A forest road then leads to the “Eight Churches” viewpoint, offering views of the Pragser Dolomites and the Kühwiesenkopf, where the fossil was discovered in 1999.
Returning to the forest road, the route continues towards Alten Böden. Here, in autumn 2026, a large-scale sculpture of the Megachirella wachtleri’s head will be created using natural wood materials – another highlight along this unique themed hike.
This tour combines nature, history and art and is ideal for those who want to follow the traces of an extraordinary fossil.
