This beautiful circular walk invites you to discover the valley’s diverse landscape along a scenic panoramic route connecting the three villages of Niederolang, Oberolang and Mitterolang. The trail leads through village centres, across sunny meadows and past cultural sights, offering magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.
Although the route mainly follows paved roads and dedicated pedestrian paths, it covers a considerable distance and includes a few short, steeper sections. The tour is therefore ideal for families with children and pushchairs. For wheelchair users, an electric wheelchair or a powered wheelchair attachment is recommended.
This 7.2 km circular route starts at the church in Niederolang, where you will find a car park with a designated parking space for people with disabilities, benches, a drinking water fountain and an accessible public toilet (door width: 100 cm, grab rails and space for side transfers).
Through the Village and Uphill towards Gassl
The route begins with a gentle but steady climb along an asphalt road. Although the gradient is not extremely steep, it requires continuous effort, with inclines ranging from 8% to 10%. After passing a wayside cross with benches and beautiful views, you will reach a warning sign indicating a steep section with a 16% gradient. You can either continue along the steeply descending asphalt road or avoid this section by taking an unpaved shortcut through the forest on the right, which eventually rejoins the asphalt road. The route then continues uphill towards several farms at higher elevations, including the Mittermühlbacher Hof.
Road Crossing and Return towards Oberolang
Upon reaching the main road to Furkel Pass, follow it for a short distance along a gravel section. Particular care is required here, as the crossing to the cycle path is neither signposted nor equipped with a pedestrian crossing. After crossing the bridge over the Furkelbach stream, the route descends gently to join trail no. 32 before climbing steeply again on an unpaved surface with drainage channels and gradients of 11–13%. At the top of the climb, you can take a break and enjoy the beautiful scenery overlooking the meadows towards Oberolang.
Oberolang and Mitterolang
From here, the road is asphalted again and runs pleasantly flat through open green spaces. This section offers magnificent views, benches at every junction, a drinking water fountain and a monument. It is the most accessible part of the entire route.
Below the Panorama Restaurant and Pizzeria, you will pass the first bus stop before following a steadily descending pavement into Oberolang. Continue straight ahead for approximately 500 metres through the village until you turn left onto Chorherr-Gamper-Straße. A paved footpath runs alongside this road, passing a playground and the health centre. After a short section without a pavement, you will reach a large car park and the church in the centre of Mitterolang.
Return via the Shared Cycling and Walking Path and Final Section
From the centre of Mitterolang, continue straight ahead past the public green spaces and follow the designated shared cycling and walking path. This straight, flat section provides a safe route to the entrance of Niederolang.
Recommendation for shortening the route: If you prefer, you can end your walk here and return to the starting point by public transport. From Oberolang onwards and throughout the centre of Mitterolang, there are numerous bus and CallBus stops. If you wish to avoid the demanding final section, we recommend finishing your walk here and taking public transport back to Niederolang.
The final section begins at the bus stop at the entrance to Niederolang and requires particular caution. At Rainerhof, turn left onto a side road with a very steep ramp featuring a gradient of 18–20% (equipped with a handrail). This leads to an unpaved elevated path that descends steeply towards the bridge in Niederolang, where you will encounter a threshold approximately 3 cm high without a ramp. After crossing the bridge, a final steep climb on cobblestones takes you back to the car park at the church, completing the circular route.
By car: From Bruneck, follow the SS49 main road towards Olang and continue to the car park at the church in Niederolang.
By public transport: Citybus line 435.2 and CallBus service (Niederolang, Kirche stop).
Directly at the church in Niederolang.
