Respect the mountain

Towards our future

Sustainability in the Dolomites

The initiative “Respect the mountain”, inspired by the project “Refill your bottle – Brixen”, began under the original heading “Plastic-free Dolomites and took shape within the working group for the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage of South Tyrol’s tourist boards. Guided by IDM and the Provincial Department for Nature, Landscape and Territorial Development, the topic was expanded to include all stakeholders – from tourism and environmental associations to Alpine associations, provincial offices and accommodation facilities.

Spotlight on sustainability: drinking water and waste prevention

“Respect the mountain” specifically focuses on two key areas of sustainability: access to drinking water and waste prevention. During the project’s development phase between 2020 and 2021, several measures were tested in a pilot area before being implemented across the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage territory in South Tyrol.

From concept to reality

Following the test phase, these measures have been gradually rolled out across the Dolomites, with local tourist boards coordinating efforts and acting as liaisons for partner businesses. The long-term goal is to expand the initiative throughout South Tyrol, actively promoting sustainable tourism and the preservation of our unique natural heritage.

Stepping out to do good
Clean Up Days

For four days, from September 18 to 21, there is just one motto in Olang/Valdaora: step out and help us collect waste during the SÜDTIROL CleanUp Days! This large-scale campaign is organised by the Patron non-profit association.

Registration and coordination of routes are managed out via the interactive CleanUP Map at www.plasticfreepeaks.com, where you are free to choose your preferred date and itinerary. The CleanUP kit, which is provided to all participants and includes a reusable and recyclable fabric bag and stainless steel tongs, is available free of charge at the Olang Tourist Board.

Waste concerns all of us
Let’s protect the alpine world together

Our Alps are a precious yet fragile habitat, where particular climate conditions slow down the natural decomposition of waste - with some materials even never breaking down at all. Abandoned waste not only pollutes the landscape, but it also harms wildlife and people. That’s why the best kind of waste is the one that never gets created in the first place!

Here’s how you can help keep the environment clean

  • Don’t leave anything behind: take back everything you brought.
  • Pack mindfully: bring only what you need to avoid potential waste.
  • Carry waste back to the valley: rubbish has no place in nature.
  • Dispose of waste properly: sort and recycle waste even at home.

Together, we can preserve a clean alpine environment – for ourselves and for future generations!

Your smart companion in the mountains
MOVE – hike and bike

MOVE – hike and bike is an innovative app developed by a team from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Padua to make your mountain adventures safer. Thanks to a patented algorithm, the app creates a personalized avatar (MOVEr) based on your individual characteristics. It calculates your personal hiking or biking time for each route and provides valuable tips to help you enjoy your tour to the fullest.

Through collaboration with the tourist associations of Olang and Antholz Valley, you can use this service on the hiking and biking trails in these areas. At the start of the trails, you’ll find QR codes that take you directly to the app and the available routes.
MOVE supports you during your tours, but the choice of route and your safety remain your own responsibility. Before setting off, carefully assess your physical condition, the weather conditions, and your equipment.
