Climate Change and Climate Adaptation

How Olang is preparing for the challenges of a changing environment

Together for Tomorrow – Olang Actively Shapes the Change

In Olang, our mountains and natural landscapes take center stage – and with them, our responsibility. Climate change presents us with new challenges: warmer summers, less reliable snow, shifting vegetation, and changing weather patterns. At the same time, it opens up opportunities – if we act early.

By developing a Climate Adaptation Plan and through the existing Municipal Climate Plan, we are taking an active approach to this path. Our goal is to preserve our home, promote sustainable development, and ensure a livable and recreational environment for both residents and guests. Every action, every idea counts – let’s make a difference together.

Current Climate Data
How South Tyrol Is Changing

Climate change is already noticeably affecting our region: mild winters, hot summers, and irregular precipitation. These developments impact snow reliability, water resources, flora and fauna, as well as tourism offerings.

  • +2.1 °C temperature increase since 1980

  • Increase in heavy rainfall days

  • Longer summer drought periods

  • Decline in snow depth below 1,500 m

  • Increase in heatwaves and tropical nights

  • Higher risk of debris flows, landslides and windthrow events

Strategies for a Resilient and Future-Oriented Destination
Climate Change and Climate Adaptation

To actively address climate-related challenges, the tourism associations of Olang and Antholzertal have jointly developed a Climate Change Adaptation Plan and an Action Plan.

These documents define and prioritise key measures aimed at strengthening the region’s long-term resilience and future viability.

Measures already implemented or currently in progress include:

  • Establishment of a Green Team

  • Reforestation projects and biodiversity protection measures

  • Awareness-raising initiatives for accommodations and guests

  • Gradual implementation of our own events as certified Green Events

  • Development of sustainable tourism products (e.g. nature-based experiences)

  • Active visitor management and promotion of sustainable mobility

Further measures are continuously being developed and implemented in cooperation with municipalities, accommodations and local partners.

Climate Action Starts in Everyday Life – Taking Responsibility Together
Acting Locally – for Guests and Residents

Everyone can make a difference. Even small changes in everyday life help make our region more sustainable.

Tips for Climate-Friendly Behavior:

  • Travel by train, bus, or bicycle whenever possible

  • Share rides with others

  • Use e-mobility options

  • Save energy when heating and using electricity

  • Buy regional and seasonal products

  • Use water and nature respectfully

  • Separate waste and avoid plastic

Together on the Climate Path – Our Journey Toward CO₂ Reduction and a Sustainable Future
Municipal Climate Plan

In parallel, the Municipal Climate Plan of Olang defines concrete measures to reduce CO₂ emissions, promote sustainable mobility, and increase energy efficiency. The goal is to actively prepare the region for future changes and make it climate-friendly in the long term.
